Hilo offers some walkable areas mainly in its downtown, where historic buildings and local markets are concentrated. However, these areas are relatively small compared to the overall spread of the town, where attractions and essential amenities are often dispersed, making walking less practical for travelers looking to explore beyond downtown. Consequently, a car is often necessary to access the fuller array of experiences in and around Hilo.
Hilo's public transit is provided by the Hele-On Bus system, which is an economical option (currently free until 2025) but limited in its reach and frequency, requiring careful planning for those relying on it. The service includes routes to popular destinations like Hawaii Volcanoes National Park but lacks connections like a shuttle from the local airport, restricting ease of access for travelers without a personal vehicle.
Biking in Hilo is somewhat viable with paths like the Hilo Bayfront Trail and dedicated lanes on Kalanianaole Avenue. However, fast traffic and the occasional presence of large vehicles like semi-trucks can make cycling intimidating in some areas. While there are picturesque routes along the bay, infrastructure is limited, and transporting a bike across certain intersections can be challenging, reducing overall safety and comfort for travelers using bikes as their primary mode of transport.
