Getting Around Honolulu: Walkability, Public Transit & Biking

Walkability

85
Excellent

Honolulu shines as a walkable city, especially in areas like Waikiki and downtown, where many attractions, eateries, and essential services are conveniently close. The compact layout of these neighborhoods allows travelers to explore and manage errands on foot easily. Sidewalks are generally well-kept, providing a safe walking environment. Though a vehicle can be beneficial for exploring the broader island, daily life in Honolulu does not necessitate it for a traveler.

Public Transit

75
Excellent

Honolulu's public transportation is robust, centered around 'TheBus' system, which offers extensive coverage across Oahu. It's a reliable mode of transport for reaching popular spots. The inclusion of the HOLO card system simplifies fare payment, enhancing ease of use. While it may not match the speed of private vehicles, it remains a strong option for those who wish to avoid car rental.

Bikeability

70
Excellent

Biking in Honolulu is feasible and increasingly popular thanks to a developing network of bike lanes and paths. The city has invested in cycling infrastructure, and Biki, the local bike-share service, adds to the accessibility. Despite some areas experiencing heavy traffic, which can deter bikers, dedicated facilities and scenic routes offer enjoyable and practical cycling opportunities. However, travelers should be aware of restrictions such as the ban on sidewalk biking in business districts.

Aloha!

I am a DN stationed in Honolulu, Hawai’i, and I recommend the Kuhio Banyan Club for those wishing to stay longer. It is centrally located in Waikiki, on Kuhio Ave.

I also recommend buying the week pass for the Trolley Hawai’i because it has four lines, and although it works as a hop-on/hop-off tourist thing, it is very useful to get to the main places within the Central/ South Shores of O’ahu. Also, as they hire local drivers ( natives), you help the local community. Tip: Take the Blue Line, get out at Sea Life Park, and walk to Makapu’u Beach. It is a beach frequented by locals, so you will be off the beaten track. Return to Waikiki with The Bus ( local city bus).

Groceries: choose the ABC Store. They are everywhere on the island!!

Aloha Mai!
