Getting Around Hsinchu City: Walkability, Public Transit & Biking

Taiwan Province

Walkability

75
Excellent

Hsinchu City offers a blend of high walkability, especially in its downtown area. A blend of historical sites, temples, shops, and restaurants are easily accessible on foot, thanks to its compact city layout. Although sidewalks have seen improvements, challenges such as uneven surfaces persist, slightly hindering the walking experience. The central area remains quite walkable for daily errands and exploration, but the convenience decreases as one moves away from the city center.

Public Transit

60
Okay

Hsinchu's public transportation infrastructure is adequately developed, with buses connecting key areas like universities, train stations, and the Science Park. However, the location of the High Speed Rail in neighboring Zhubei adds an extra step for city travelers. While services like intercity buses and train systems are convenient, local bus services are often infrequent and face delays due to traffic. While plans for a light rail system exist, it has yet to materialize, leaving current local transit options as limited but functional.

Bikeability

70
Excellent

Hsinchu provides a reasonably bike-friendly environment with available bike lanes and rental stations through the YouBike program. The city's flat terrain makes biking a practical transportation option. Additionally, the presence of a 17km coastal bikeway enhances recreational cycling opportunities. Despite some challenges like the prevalence of scooters, there are ample dedicated bikeways and roads that support cycling, making the city a feasible place for bike enthusiasts to explore.
