Mission Viejo is a suburban city where most errands require a car. While some neighborhoods like Vista del Lago Apartments, Pinecrest, and Evergreen Ridge are more walkable, the city is spread out. You'll find parks and some commercial areas, but a car is generally needed for daily life. While walking around Lake Mission Viejo is pleasant, it's more recreational than practical for daily errands.
Public transit options are limited. The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) operates bus services connecting Mission Viejo to other parts of the county. There's also the Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo Metrolink station for regional commuter rail to places like Los Angeles. The MV Shuttle offers a free local service, but its hours are limited (6:30 AM to 7 PM, Monday-Friday), and it primarily serves key destinations within the city. Overall, public transit is not very convenient for getting around Mission Viejo.
Mission Viejo offers some bike trails and circuits, but it's not a biker's paradise. There are some bike lanes, but gaps exist, making it only "bikeable". The city is developing a Bikeway Master Plan to improve cycling conditions, but currently, biking is only somewhat viable for errands or daily life. The terrain can be hilly in some areas, further impacting bikeability.
