Getting Around Newport: Walkability, Public Transit & Biking

Newport's downtown area is highly conducive to walking, with a plethora of attractions, shops, and eateries all within a short distance. Its compact design allows travelers to conveniently access historic sites, the bustling harbor, and everyday amenities without needing a vehicle. A standout feature is the Cliff Walk, a pedestrian-only path offering breathtaking coastal views. While some parts of the city feature hilly terrain, the critical areas most frequented by travelers remain very accessible on foot.

Newport's public transportation is somewhat limited, primarily serviced by the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) buses. While RIPTA connects Newport with other parts of Rhode Island, including Providence, the frequency and convenience of the service don't quite match those found in larger urban areas. However, a trolley service within Newport aids in reaching major attractions and there is a seasonal ferry to Providence, providing some travel options for the patient traveler.

Newport offers a moderately bike-friendly environment with the availability of scenic routes and rentable bicycles. Locals and travelers alike can enjoy rides along Ocean Drive or the Cliff Walk.
