Petrolina offers a relatively walkable environment, with a compact layout in central areas allowing travelers to accomplish daily errands on foot. The riverfront, known as Orla Rio Sao Francisco, provides a pleasant strolling area, and the flat terrain makes walking easy. However, travelers should take precautions regarding safety, particularly at night, even though the city is generally safe in public areas during the day.

Public transit in Petrolina primarily consists of buses, which are generally well-maintained but can become crowded during peak hours. The routes, marked in Portuguese, might be difficult for non-Portuguese speakers to navigate, and there are occasional reports of petty crime, necessitating caution.
