Getting Around Podgorica: Walkability, Public Transit & Biking

Podgorica Municipality

Walkability

78
Excellent

Podgorica is a relatively compact city, and the city center is quite walkable. You can find cafes, restaurants, shops, and essential services within walking distance of many residential areas, especially in the central districts. The old town (Stara Varoš) and new town (Nova Varoš) are best explored on foot. While some parts of the city are more spread out, a traveler based in a central location can accomplish most daily errands without a car.

Public Transit

60
Okay

Podgorica relies primarily on buses for public transportation. Buses are frequent and inexpensive, covering most of the city, including connections to the airport (though a short walk to the train station might be needed to avoid taxis). There are also trains connecting Podgorica to other parts of Montenegro, including the coast. While the bus system is comprehensive, it may require some navigation and cash payments, and some bus stops are unmarked. Compared to cities with metro systems, Podgorica's transit is less convenient overall, but sufficient for getting around.

Bikeability

55
Okay

Podgorica is relatively flat, making biking feasible. The city is investing in bike paths, but the infrastructure is still developing, with some gaps and inconsistencies. While designated bike lanes are not common, secondary roads often have low traffic. There are options for bike rentals in the city. Biking can be a good option for getting around, but caution is advised on busier roads due to Montenegrin driving habits.
