Riverside is somewhat walkable, especially in neighborhoods like Downtown and Arlington where amenities and attractions are within walking distance. The historic Downtown area offers a compact space for strolls, featuring the notable Mission Inn and various shops and restaurants. However, due to its largely suburban layout, much of Riverside requires a car for errands and activities outside these key neighborhoods, leading to a more car-dependent lifestyle.

Riverside's public transport is managed by the Riverside Transit Agency, providing a reasonable network of buses throughout western Riverside County. While it offers local and regional routes, as well as a user-friendly mobile app for trip planning, the coverage and frequency may not be sufficient for all travelers. The system is functional for commuting to major areas but might limit more spontaneous travel or exploration outside the main lines.

Riverside offers an encouraging environment for biking with several dedicated paths like the Santa Ana River Trail and Victoria Avenue Bike Path, the latter being known for its scenic beauty and historic significance. While some parts of the city are well-equipped for cyclists, inconsistencies in the bike network and traffic conditions in certain areas could pose challenges for less experienced riders.
