Getting Around Vaughan: Walkability, Public Transit & Biking

Ontario

Walkability

50
Okay

Vaughan is a suburban city, and while it is making efforts to improve walkability, it still has a way to go. Some areas, particularly around the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre (VMC), are more walkable with condos, shops, and access to transit. However, many parts of Vaughan are car-dependent, with sprawling residential areas and large commercial centers separated by busy roads. While a recent study ranked Vaughan in the top 10 most walkable cities in Canada for tourists, this was based on the distance between a few key attractions, and doesn't fully reflect the daily experience of living there. A digital nomad may find they can accomplish some errands on foot in certain neighborhoods, but a car or public transit will often be necessary.

Public Transit

Okay

Vaughan has a decent public transit system, primarily consisting of York Region Transit (YRT) buses, including the Viva rapid transit service, and connections to the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) subway. The VMC is a major transit hub, providing access to the subway, Viva, and local bus routes. GO Transit also provides commuter train and bus services connecting Vaughan to other parts of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). While public transit can be used to reach key areas, coverage and frequency may be limited in some neighborhoods, requiring some planning and potentially longer travel times. Overall, the transit system is good but not excellent, making it a viable option for getting around, but not always the most convenient.

Bikeability

Okay

Biking in Vaughan is possible, but not ideal. The city is working to expand its cycling infrastructure, with new cycle tracks and multi-use pathways being added. However, bike lanes are not yet widespread, and some areas may be risky or uncomfortable to bike in due to traffic. While there are recreational trails in parks and open spaces, using a bike for errands or daily commuting may be challenging in many parts of the city. The terrain is generally flat, which is a plus, but the overall bike-friendliness is still somewhat limited.
