Abu Dhabi offers a moderately walkable environment, especially in areas like Downtown Abu Dhabi, Al Reem Island, and along the Corniche, where there are dedicated pedestrian walkways, cafes, and attractions within a reasonable distance. However, extreme heat for most of the year and distances between walkable neighborhoods can pose challenges for travelers relying solely on foot travel.
While not as developed as some neighboring cities, Abu Dhabi's public transport is fairly reliable due to its extensive bus network and affordable taxi services. Travelers can easily navigate city areas with air-conditioned buses and use the 'Hafilat' card for convenience. However, the absence of a metro system and less comprehensive coverage can make it less appealing, especially in comparison to nearby cities like Dubai.
Abu Dhabi is working towards becoming more bike-friendly, with dedicated cycling paths and plans for further expanding its infrastructure making it a feasible option for travelers. Areas such as the Corniche and Yas Island offer safer cycling experiences. Yet, cycling in regular traffic can be risky, and extreme weather conditions can hinder biking activities.
