Getting Around Asuncion: Walkability, Public Transit & Biking

Capital District

Walkability

55
Okay

Asuncion is a sprawling city with certain neighborhoods like Villa Morra and Recoleta offering a reasonably walkable environment. These areas provide access to restaurants, malls, and grocery stores. However, many parts of the city require some form of transportation due to the city's spread-out nature. Sidewalks are often uneven, and the city's hot and rainy climate can make walking less appealing. Despite these challenges, neighborhoods like Shopping Del Sol offer a more walkable experience.

Public Transit

60
Okay

Buses act as the primary method of public transportation in Asuncion. They are affordable and widespread, connecting various parts of the city and nearby areas. However, the bus system can be confusing for first-time users, necessitating specific cards like the Jaha or Mas for payment. Although upcoming projects aim to introduce electric buses and improve the system, taxis and ride-sharing services like Uber and Bolt offer convenient alternatives.

Bikeability

40
Bad

Biking in Asuncion is challenging due to heavy traffic and a lack of widespread bicycle infrastructure. Some designated bike lanes exist, particularly near the riverfront, but overall support for cyclists is minimal. Although the geography is relatively flat and potentially good for biking, the harsh weather and current traffic conditions can be significant barriers. While there are plans for an extensive bike lane network, it remains a future project for the city.
