Getting Around Delhi: Walkability, Public Transit & Biking

National Capital Territory of Delhi

Walkability

58
Okay

Delhi offers a mix of walkable neighborhoods and less pedestrian-friendly areas. Central and South Delhi areas such as Connaught Place and Khan Market have a more pedestrian-oriented layout with cafes, shops, and cultural spots within walking distance. However, in many areas, sidewalks are inconsistent or poorly maintained, making it challenging to rely solely on walking, especially navigating between neighborhoods. Traffic and pollution can further detract from the walking experience, although green spaces offer some respite for leisure walks.

Public Transit

Excellent

Delhi's public transportation is quite robust, with the Delhi Metro forming the backbone of its transit system. The metro network is extensive, covering many key locations and providing a reliable, affordable, and efficient way to travel across the city. Buses supplement the metro, although they can be crowded and delayed. For more convenient travel, ride-hailing services like Uber and Ola are common. However, reaching specific destinations still requires careful planning around these key transit nodes.

Bikeability

Bad

Cycling in Delhi is not highly recommended due to heavy traffic, insufficient and poorly maintained cycling lanes, and high pollution levels. The city is mostly flat, which would typically be good for biking, but the lack of infrastructure and safety concerns overshadow this advantage. Although some initiatives aim to enhance cycling facilities, biking is not generally a practical or safe solution for travelers new to the city.
