Getting Around Eau Claire: Walkability, Public Transit & Biking

Wisconsin

Walkability

68
Okay

Eau Claire is "Somewhat Walkable." The downtown area is definitely walkable, with shops, restaurants, and cultural attractions within easy reach. Several neighborhoods like North River Fronts, Randall Park, and the Third Ward are more pedestrian-friendly. A self-guided audio walking tour covers 2.6 miles (4.2 km) of Eau Claire's city streets. However, outside of the downtown core and the university area, the city becomes more car-dependent. A traveler could find a place in a walkable neighborhood and manage daily life without a car, but exploring other parts of the city or running errands further afield would likely require one.

Public Transit

Limited

Eau Claire has "Some Transit" available. Eau Claire Transit operates a bus system with several routes covering the city and extending to Altoona. The buses connect major employment centers, shopping areas, and the university. There are 15 core routes. However, service frequency can range from 30 minutes to an hour depending on the route and time of day. Importantly, there is no service on Sundays or Saturday evenings. While useful for some, a traveler might find the limited hours and frequency restrictive, especially if they want to explore the city on weekends or work late. Inter-city bus lines like Greyhound and Jefferson Lines connect Eau Claire to other cities, which is a plus for longer trips.

Bikeability

65
Okay

Eau Claire is considered "Bikeable." The city has invested in cycling infrastructure, including recreational trails and bike lanes. Eau Claire has 28.94 miles of recreational trails, plus 4 miles of mountain biking trails. The Eau Claire City Trail connects with the Chippewa River State Trail. The terrain has some slopes, but the city is generally manageable by bike. The city has a new system of color-coded and numbered bike routes. Winter biking is also an option with groomed trails. However, gaps in the bike infrastructure may exist, and biking on some roads might feel risky or uncomfortable due to traffic.
