Fukui's city center is compact enough to offer travelers the convenience of accessing cafes, restaurants, and shops on foot, particularly around the Fukui Station area. The scenic pathways, like those along the Asuwa River, enhance the walking experience, especially during the cherry blossom season. However, key attractions and some accommodations are spread out beyond this central area, which can slightly limit a traveler's experience without using additional modes of transportation.

Fukui provides a reasonably reliable public transportation system with Fukui Station at its core. The station connects travelers to various parts of the city and beyond through JR lines and Echizen Railway. Local buses expand the reach to destinations like Eiheiji Temple and are complemented by community buses such as the Smile Bus. However, the network is more central-focused, making connections between attractions without reverting to the main hubs somewhat cumbersome, leading many to consider rental cars for broader exploration.

Fukui offers an encouraging environment for biking, particularly due to its generally flat terrain and designated cycling routes. Facilities like the Fukuchari bike-share with e-bikes and rental services provide travelers with accessible biking options. Routes along the Asuwa and Kuzuryu Rivers are specifically appealing. Nonetheless, busy roads and incomplete cycling infrastructure in certain areas may pose challenges, making cycling a better option for recreation rather than a primary mode of transportation.
