Manukau is not very walkable due to its car-dependent nature and the spread-out nature of essential amenities such as shops and restaurants. The central area, which includes major hubs like Westfield Manukau City and the Manukau Bus and Train station, does offer some walkability, with recent pedestrian improvements on Putney Way enhancing the experience in this zone. However, moving beyond the central hub often requires a vehicle or public transportation, and the unattractive streetscapes detract from the overall pedestrian experience.
Manukau is a key transportation hub for South Auckland, with a well-developed bus network and a train station offering frequent services to Auckland and other destinations. This connectivity allows travelers to access the Auckland city center and surrounding areas without a car. Although the transit system supports travel to key locations, some interruptions in train services due to maintenance can pose challenges, and relying entirely on public transit may limit access to more remote areas.
Bikeability in Manukau is currently constrained by infrastructure gaps and challenging terrain and traffic conditions. Although plans are underway to enhance cycling networks, these improvements are yet to reach completion. There are some recreational routes, but the existing infrastructure doesn't fully support daily commuting needs for cyclists. As it stands, biking may not be the most practical option for consistent daily errands or transportation.
