Getting Around Mazatlan: Walkability, Public Transit & Biking

Mazatlan's Centro Histórico, or Old Town, offers an exceptionally walkable environment. With streets tailored for pedestrian comfort, this area is replete with colonial architecture, lively markets, and local dining options. Travelers can comfortably navigate to various attractions, shops, and eateries on foot. The Malecon, one of the world's longest boardwalks, adds to the walking appeal with stunning coastal views and a safe pedestrian path. Nonetheless, walkability diminishes outside the central area, requiring some planning when venturing further afield.

Mazatlan offers a serviceable public transportation system with a network of buses connecting various attractions and neighborhoods. The iconic "Sabalo-Centro" bus stands out for tourists, conveniently running along the scenic Malecon. Additionally, unique forms of transit like "pulmonias"—open-air taxis—and red truck taxis known as "aurigas" provide fun and practical alternatives for groups or those looking to explore in a leisurely manner. However, the system has limitations in frequency and reach outside main areas.

Mazatlan provides moderate bike-friendliness with notable infrastructure along certain key avenues such as Avenida Del Mar and parts of the Malecon, where bike rentals are readily available. These paths offer safe and enjoyable cycling routes for travelers, but beyond these areas, challenges include high traffic and scant dedicated lanes. While feasible and scenic in designated spots, cycling in Mazatlan may not be as comfortable across the city due to inconsistent infrastructure.
