Mbarara offers a walkable environment, particularly in areas near the city center such as Kubiri, Kakyenkye, and Makenke, which provide access to various amenities. These neighborhoods are favored for their proximity to restaurants, shops, and potentially coworking spaces, making them convenient for travelers seeking accommodation with easy access to daily essentials. However, some errands might require longer walks or additional transport due to the sprawling nature of the city.

While Mbarara has some public transit options, they may not be highly convenient for daily use. Buses and boda bodas (motorcycle taxis) are commonly used for transport, and Mbarara functions as a major transit hub for longer journeys to destinations like Kampala or neighboring regions. However, within the city, the informal and less systematic nature of transport can make daily commuting less reliable, and reaching the nearest airport in Entebbe will require additional ground transport arrangements.

Mbarara is somewhat bikeable, with the surrounding roads offering both challenges and scenic rides. The road conditions in some parts are good, particularly towards Masaka, allowing for enjoyable cycling. However, the terrain tends to be hilly and can present difficult climbs, especially from Ntungamo to Mbarara. Additionally, cyclists face challenges due to limited biking paths, traffic, and the occasional herd of cows on the roadside, which could disrupt a bike-friendly experience.
