Playa del Carmen is a walker's dream, especially in the bustling central areas. The pedestrian-friendly 5th Avenue is a vibrant zone full of shops, restaurants, and entertainment, enabling travelers to enjoy the locale easily. The city's grid layout makes navigating on foot straightforward, and with many attractions and essential services like cafes, markets, and coworking spaces just a short walk away, renting a car becomes mostly unnecessary for those staying in the central neighborhoods.

While not the most extensive, Playa del Carmen's public transit options are sufficient for travelers. The ADO buses provide convenient links to major cities and the airport, while affordable colectivos offer local travel along the popular routes to Tulum or Cancun. Taxis are plentiful and can bridge the gaps where buses and colectivos may not reach. However, the need to agree on taxi fares in advance and the limited local routes make it more of a supplementary transit option rather than a primary choice for all travel needs.

Cycling in Playa del Carmen is encouraged by its flat terrain and the presence of dedicated bike lanes, particularly along 10th Avenue. Bike rentals are easy to find, enabling travelers to navigate the town efficiently. While biking is not permitted on the pedestrian-only 5th Avenue, and caution is advised on busy roads, cycling remains a practical and enjoyable way to get around, especially when sticking to designated paths and quieter streets for safety and convenience.
