Getting Around Rustenburg: Walkability, Public Transit & Biking

Rustenburg offers limited walkability, particularly in the central business district where shops and services are somewhat accessible. However, the city layout tends to be more spread out in residential areas, which may require travelers to rely on other forms of transport for more distant amenities. Staying centrally will benefit walkers, but the car-dependent nature of the area reduces overall foot convenience.

Rustenburg's public transit is developing, with the implementation of the Rustenburg Rapid Transport (RRT) system, also known as Yarona. Although the system has faced delays, its goal is to provide extensive coverage with Bus Rapid Transit routes and integration with existing bus and taxi services. This ongoing development suggests improving access around the city, though currently, travelers might need to rely on alternative options like Uber for more immediate needs.

The bikeability of Rustenburg is quite limited due to insufficient bike infrastructure in many areas. Although some dedicated bicycle lanes have been constructed as part of the RRT project, they are not widespread enough to make biking a primary transport mode. The city's terrain may also pose challenges for cyclists. Therefore, while biking is an option on certain routes with dedicated lanes, it remains less feasible for extensive travel across Rustenburg.
