Getting Around Sousse: Walkability, Public Transit & Biking

Sousse Governorate

Walkability

78
Excellent

Sousse is a very walkable city, particularly within the Medina and downtown areas. Travelers staying in these central locations can easily access cafes, shops, restaurants, and historical sites on foot. The beach is also within walking distance from many neighborhoods. While some areas might require longer walks (35-45 minutes to get from Khezama to downtown), overall, daily errands and exploration can be done without a car. Keep in mind that some sidewalks might not be perfectly maintained, potentially presenting challenges for wheelchair users.

Public Transit

65
Okay

Sousse has decent public transportation options. The 'Sahel Metro' connects Sousse to nearby cities like Monastir and Mahdia, making regional travel relatively easy. Buses are available to reach most parts of Tunisia, and shared taxis, known as 'louages,' are convenient for travel to other cities. While train services exist, they can be unreliable with delays. Taxis are readily available within the city. The transit options are varied but may suffer from issues with reliability and coverage.

Bikeability

Bad

Biking in Sousse presents challenges due to limited infrastructure. Some cycling lanes are under development, but the existing provision is insufficient for stress-free biking. Although the terrain is manageable, the lack of dedicated bike lanes and heavy traffic could make cycling risky or uncomfortable for daily errands. For those confident in navigating city conditions, biking might still be an adventurous way to explore the city and its surrounds.
