Trincomalee presents a somewhat walkable environment, particularly within the main town where basic amenities are accessible on foot. However, difficulties like street harassment and the need to cover larger distances to reach popular beaches slightly reduce its walking appeal. Although travelers can navigate the town on foot for short distances, undertaking daily errands solely by walking might require supplementation with other forms of transport.

Trincomalee has a moderately functional public transport system, with buses and trains connecting to major cities like Colombo and Jaffna. However, for travelers, the frequency and comfort of these services may not suffice for convenient or spontaneous trips, especially for local travel or exploring the more remote surrounding areas. Tuk-tuks or taxis often become necessary for more convenient travel within or beyond the town.

Cycling in Trincomalee offers a unique way to explore the city and its nearby lagoon areas, but it's not the most ideal due to limited dedicated cycling infrastructure and concerns over road safety.
