Getting Around Tulum: Walkability, Public Transit & Biking

Quintana Roo

Walkability

Okay

Tulum is divided into two main areas: Tulum Town (Pueblo) and the Beach (Zona Hotelera). Tulum Pueblo is compact with amenities like shops, restaurants, and the ADO bus station close by, making it feasible for travelers to rely on walking for daily tasks. However, the 3-mile distance between the town and the beach can be challenging to walk, especially under the hot sun. While the beach area offers some walkable sections, it is largely spread out, and the sidewalks in Tulum can be narrow and uneven outside core areas.

Public Transit

Okay

Tulum's public transit relies on *colectivos* (shared vans) and ADO buses. *Colectivos* are cost-effective for reaching nearby towns and attractions, while ADO buses connect travelers to larger cities in Mexico. However, public transport options within Tulum itself are limited, with most services catering mainly to local commutes. Taxis are plentiful but can be costly, particularly from the town to the beach. Recently introduced golf carts add variety to transport options, but convenience for daily travel within Tulum might be limited for travelers relying on public transport alone.

Bikeability

Excellent

Biking is a favored mode of exploration and transport in Tulum due to its flat terrain. Many accommodations offer bikes for free, making it easy for travelers to navigate both Tulum Town and the beach area. The presence of dedicated bike lanes enhances safety, particularly on the route to the beach. Biking is an excellent way to reach attractions like the Tulum ruins and cenotes. However, some road sections lack bike lanes, and traffic can be dense, particularly in the beach area, posing challenges, especially at night due to limited street lighting.
